case, however, which demonstrates that this technique can be used safely despite multiple traumatic thoracic injuries, including complex sternal fractures and a flail segment. Several of the key studies of prone ventilation specifically excluded patients with severe chest wall injuries 7 or intracranial hypertension. 8 We believe this case illustrates that this treatment may, with care, be considered for such patients and also suggest that they should not be excluded from further studies in this field.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a bridge to liver transplantation for acute respiratory distress syndrome-induced life-threatening hypoxaemia aggravated by hepatopulmonary syndrome

INTRODUCTION Combined with massive lung aeration loss resulting from acute respiratory distress syndrome, hepatopulmonary syndrome, a liver-induced vascular lung disorder characterized by diffuse or localized dilated pulmonary capillaries, may induce hypoxaemia and death in patients with end-stage liver disease. METHODS The case of such a patient presenting with both disorders and in whom an ...

Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation in the management of 2009 influenza A (H1N1) refractory respiratory failure.

Rapidly progressive acute respiratory failure attributed to 2009 H1N1 influenza A infection has been reported worldwide-3. Refractory hypoxaemia despite conventional mechanical ventilation and lung protective strategies has resulted in the use a combination of rescue therapies, such as conservative fluid management, prone positioning, inhaled nitric oxide, high frequency oscillatory ventilation...

Pumpless extracorporeal lung assist for the treatment of severe, refractory status asthmaticus.

BACKGROUND Until recently, the only available lung-protective treatment option for carbon dioxide removal due to severe, refractory status asthmaticus has been extracorporeal pump-driven membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Pumpless extracorporeal lung assist (pECLA) may serve as an alternative therapy for these patients. CASE REPORT A 42-year-old woman presented with an acute exacerbation of asthma ...

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as emergency treatment for life-threatening acute severe asthma.

We report a case of acute severe asthma that was resistant to full medical treatment, mechanical ventilation and halothane inhalation. Because a fatal outcome appeared likely extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, involving partial cardiac bypass, using femoral artery and femoral vein cannulation was instituted as an urgent measure. The patient then made a satisfactory recovery.

Early Administration of Venovenous Extracorporeal Life Support for Status Asthmaticus during Anaesthetic Induction: Case Report and Literature Review

Here we report a case of a 40-year-old man who visited the emergency room with severe chest pain. He showed a Stanford type B aortic dissection on chest-computed tomography. Despite medical treatment and malperfusion of lower extremities, acute renal failure developed; hence thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) was considered under general anaesthesia. After endotracheal intubation, vent...
